These services are provided for property developers, builders, construction managers, architects, planning consultants, solicitors, industrialists and environmental consultants.

Charlie is one of a very few practising acousticians in Scotland to have devoted his life, from tertiary education onwards, to acoustics. He studied Electroacoustics as an undergraduate at the University of Salford, gaining an upper second class honours degree in 1983. He then gained his initial professional experience in London, working as an acoustic consultant with Sandy Brown Associates until early in 1986. During these 3 years he continued his academic studies, by remote learning, and, achieving the highest marks in his class, was awarded the degree of Master of Science in Acoustics, Vibration and Noise Control by Heriot-Watt University in 1986.
It was in that year that he moved to Edinburgh to work as an associate partner of Robin Mackenzie and to lecture part-time at Heriot-Watt University in acoustics, vibration and noise control. In 1989 he became a founder partner of the Robin Mackenzie Partnership and worked within that firm until 1996. In 1991 he became one of the first 9 people in the UK to be awarded chartered engineer status by virtue of his academic qualifications and working experience in acoustics. Whilst having a good knowledge of a broad range of acoustical subjects, his particular fields of expertise are: sound insulation testing, noise issues affecting planning applications, architectural acoustics, mechanical services plant noise, industrial noise control, workplace noise assessment and occupational deafness litigation.
Charlie Fleming Associates currently employs two acousticians, Peter Dunlop and Sandy Lamb. Peter has an upper second class honours degree in Audio Technology with Electronics, which he received from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2015. He started work with Charlie Fleming Associates in 2016. Sandy has an upper second class honours degree in Music Technology, which he received from the University of the West of Scotland in 2016. He started work with Charlie Fleming Associates in 2017. Peter is a corporate member and Sandy an associate member of the Institute of Acoustics.
Since starting with Charlie Fleming Associates, both Peter and Sandy have spent most of their time measuring sound insulation and environmental noise. They are responsible for downloading the results of the measurements, using the results in various calculations and preparing reports thereon. They have experience in the measurement of the following noise sources: road traffic, railway, air traffic, various industries, and music and speech from restaurants, pubs and night-clubs.
We know, from what we have seen and heard, that our service is better than that offered by many of our competitors. This is because we take more care in our work, the conclusions of which can save you money, as described below.
In one year alone, we were commissioned 6 times to carry out work which had been done badly by other “acousticians”. In these cases the first fee, paid to the other firm, was a waste of money and accepting the cheaper quotation proved to be a false economy. More importantly, in one case, had the sound insulation remedial works suggested by another firm been implemented, over £200,000 would have been spent. Our more detailed measurements showed that the remedial works were not necessary. In another, the glazing specification, prepared by the other consultant for a large housing development in Aberdeen, was reduced once we had measured the noise and calculated the internal levels more carefully. This saved the client hundreds of thousands of pounds. In another case, our more precise calculations meant that the developer was able to double the number of houses he could construct on the land. In the remaining cases, the reports by the other firms were rejected by the planning officers, and the developments did not proceed until we had dealt with them.
